Spirit of the Ottoman

An historic Islamic design

Location: EXPO 2019 Beijing, China

Project Type: Show Garden

Client: Pera Event

The concept of the garden is inspired by the traditional Islamic-Ottoman gardens of the Tulip period in the 18th Century. The layout follows the Chahar Bagh or Four Gardens Islamic quadrilateral design based on the four gardens of Paradise mentioned in the Qur’an. It spans 2000m2.

One of the best examples of the Tulip period of Turkish Rococo architecture, the fountain of Ahmed III which is located at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, is replicated in the design to represent this important historical landmark of the period. Traditional water features Cesme, carved stone fountains Sebil and water rills create a cooling function within the space. The garden features large plane trees for shade, cypress trees that symbolize death and fruit trees that symbolize life.
