Highgate

A lush, naturalistic front garden

Location: London, UK

Project Type: Private Garden

Client: private client

The large front garden and driveway of this London house had become overgrown and messy. Our client’s brief included widening the entrance of the driveway, and installing trellises and hedges to provide more privacy. The site is within a conservation area, so our scope of work involved liaising with planners to obtain permission for changes, such as removing a large Eucalyptus tree, which had narrowed the entrance of the driveway.

The garden follows a sustainable design approach, utilising reclaimed York stone paving to blend seamlessly with the existing slabs, and reclaimed cobbles. We designed a naturalistic, woodland-style planting concept based exclusively on evergreen and white flowering shrubs and perennials.

Attractive multi-stem trees (Amelanchier lamarkii) provide spring flowers and autumn colour and native beech hedges along the boundaries provide privacy, complementing existing hedges. Planting includes evergreen shrubs, ornamental grasses and white flowering perennials. Bee-friendly plant species such as Astrantia, Aconitum, Paeonia, Hesperis and Trachelospermum also enhance the biodiversity of the garden.

A focal point of the design is a Lutyens style wooden bench. Surrounded by lush, naturalistic planting, it provides a hidden oasis and a quiet spot for contemplation.
